A poem and a little bit of running

Reading Time: < 1 minute

My goal this week was to write a poem, and post it here.

The heat reminds me the things you can’t see can suffocate you

Like ego

Like jealousy

Like expectations

Like fear

Like cologne or perfume that was dumped on not spritzed

Like stale air from a bad date that you should’ve said no to

The first line just fell out of my mouth the other day. The others followed suit, but not nearly as quickly. And honestly, I have no idea where they came from.

It’s still grossly hot here in South Carolina. I went to the gym to run today and even the gym felt hot, which could’ve been the crowding from the after work crew, but regardless – it was better than outside.

Running felt pretty good today. I did 6 rounds of sprints and worked my pace up to a what felt like a pathetic 9:50. I remember when my sprints were 6:55 and I could handle a 8:20 minute mile for a few miles. I haven’t run consistently in years. Even while training for the Spartan races last year, I wasn’t consistent. So I know I’ll get to a pace that feels good, the training and breathing part is going to be important.

My lungs were giving out before my legs were, which was a partial surprise. Mostly because I would’ve taken bets that my legs would tire first, but I have been using my inhaler more often during hard workouts – like the Spartans last year.

I’m sure with consistency and more practice, my lungs and legs and time will improve.

Until then, we’re taking things slow-ish.
